Barcelona to Montserrat Bus: Times, Stops and Prices

There is a direct Barcelona to Montserrat bus, it runs every day of the year except two, and it is the option almost nobody writes about properly. Autocares Julià operates a scheduled coach line that leaves from Sants bus station and stops at the monastery itself: no train, no change, no separate mountain transport ticket.

The catch is the schedule. There is exactly one departure a day in each direction, so the coach either fits your plans perfectly or it does not fit them at all. This page has the official times, both stops, what the day actually looks like, and the honest answer on the fare.

Barcelona to Montserrat bus timetable

Julià splits the year into two seasons. The outbound time is the same in both. Only the return changes.

The service runs Monday to Sunday in both seasons. The only days without a coach are 25 December and 1 January. The climb takes 1 hour 25 minutes and the descent 1 hour 15 minutes.

Work out your day from those numbers before you commit: in summer the coach gives you 7 hours 20 minutes on the mountain, and in winter 6 hours 20 minutes. That is a lot. It is more than enough for the basilica, the Black Madonna, lunch, the museum and a walk, and even do some shopping and it is generous enough that most guided tours look rushed next to it.

The bus stops at the Montserrat bus parking lot. This means the bus drops you off inside the sanctuary grounds, right at the same level as everything you’ve come to see, without needing to buy a ticket for the rack railway or the cable car.

Arrive early. Since there’s only one departure per day, if you miss it, you’ll have to take the rack railway or the cable car and the R5 train, and the last connections down the mountain are earlier than most people expect.

How much does the bus cost?

Here is the honest answer, and it is not the one most pages give you: Autocares Julià does not publish the fare for this line anywhere on its website. The operator puts out a timetable sheet with the stops, the times and the seasons on it, and no prices.

What you can price out in advance is the alternative, because FGC publishes everything. A combined return ticket from Barcelona covering the R5 train and the rack railway is €28.80 for an adult. That breaks down as €13.80 for the train return plus €15.00 for the rack railway return. So €28.80 is the number the coach has to beat, and it is the number to have in your head at the ticket desk.

Bus or train: which one should you take?

Take the bus if you’re looking for simplicity. A single vehicle and a single ticket take you directly to the monastery, without having to figure out which rack railway connection matches which train, and without having to wait in line in Monistrol. If you’re traveling with elderly parents, young children, or anyone who finds transfers stressful, this is the most relaxed way to get up the mountain without needing a guide.

Take the train if you want freedom. The R5 line runs all day, so you choose when to go up and when to come down—and you can even change your mind during the day.

And there’s a third thing I like about the bus: arriving at 10:40 a.m. and leaving in the afternoon lets you be on the mountain after the first wave of morning tour groups and stay there once they’ve left. In my experience, the end of the day is the quietest time, and that’s the part most visitors never get to enjoy.
