Montserrat can be visited all year round, but the experience changes a lot depending on the season, the weather and the time of day you arrive.
For most visitors, the best time to visit Montserrat is usually spring or autumn, when temperatures are more comfortable and the mountain is pleasant for walking. What those months do not give you is a quieter mountain — as you will see further down, they are the busiest of the year.
That said, Montserrat is one of the most popular day trips from Barcelona, and many people visit during the central summer months. Summer offers long daylight hours and plenty of time to explore the best things to do in Montserrat, but it can also be hot — and, as the official figures further down show, it is not the busiest time of year.

Best Time to Visit Montserrat: Quick Answer
On weather alone, the best stretch is April to June and September to October: the most comfortable temperatures and enough daylight to walk without rushing. Crowds are a separate question, and that is where most advice about Montserrat gets it wrong.
The short version: a weekday morning, and if the month is yours to choose, June. The chart further down shows why.
Montserrat Month by Month: Crowds, Temperature and Rain
Montserrat is open all year, and the honest answer to “when should I go” is that there is no single best month — there are trade-offs, and they are not the ones most guides describe.
The usual advice is to come in spring or autumn to get good weather and avoid the crowds. The official numbers say you cannot have both: October and May are the two busiest months of the year, and July is the eighth.
So instead of telling you which month is best, this page shows you the three things that actually change month to month — how many people come, how warm it gets, and how often it rains — all from official sources, measured on the mountain itself. From there you can decide which month suits the trip you want.
Read the chart as three trade-offs, not one answer.
The red bars are people. They peak in October (8,234 a day) and May (8,138), and bottom out in January (4,153). July sits at 5,938 — eighth out of twelve. If crowds are what you want to avoid, midsummer is quieter than late spring.
The gold line is heat. July and August both average 26.5°C as a daily maximum up at 918 m, which is noticeably cooler than Barcelona but still hot on exposed trails. January manages 9.1°C.
The blue strip is rain — the average number of days a month with at least 1 mm. This is where the usual advice really falls apart: April is the wettest month on the mountain (7.2 rainy days, 85 mm) and it is still the fourth busiest. October, the single busiest month, is the third rainiest.
If you want one month, look at June. It averages 23.5°C, only 3.9 rainy days, and 6,655 visitors a day — 18% fewer people than May with better odds on the weather. Nobody recommends June, and the numbers say they should. If heat is your worry, swap June for late September. If crowds are, July and the first half of August are genuinely the emptiest warm weeks of the year — you will just need an early start.
And if you are coming anyway on a date you cannot change, the chart still earns its keep: it tells you what to pack and what to expect at the ticket queues, which is most of what planning a day at Montserrat comes down to.

Montserrat is a mountain area, so the weather can feel different from Barcelona. Montserrat mountain weather can change quickly, especially because wind, clouds and temperature often feel different once you are higher on the mountain. Even if the day starts mild in the city, it may be cooler, windier or more changeable once you are on the mountain. Before visiting, it is always worth checking the weather forecast of Montserrat, especially if you plan to hike or use the funiculars.
If you are only visiting the monastery area, weather is less critical. But if you want to walk to viewpoints, take the Sant Joan Funicular or do a hike such as Sant Jeroni, weather matters much more.

Spring: One of the Best Times to Visit
Spring is one of the most pleasant periods to visit Montserrat. The weather is usually milder, the mountain feels alive, and walking around the monastery area or taking a short hike is generally more comfortable than in summer.
For many visitors, April, May and June are among the best months to visit Montserrat.
This is a very good period if you want to combine the monastery, viewpoints, funiculars and some walking without dealing with the strongest summer heat.
Summer: Popular, Bright and Hot
Summer fits naturally into Barcelona holiday plans, so plenty of people come. What surprises most visitors is that fewer come than in spring or autumn. The main advantage of summer is clear: there are more daylight hours, which means you can make the most of the day if you start early. This can be useful if you want to visit the monastery, take the Sant Joan Funicular, enjoy the viewpoints or do a longer walk.
However, the central summer months can feel hot, especially in exposed areas of the mountain. If you visit Montserrat in July or August, I strongly recommend arriving early and avoiding long hikes during the hottest part of the day. Summer is not a bad time to visit Montserrat, but it requires better planning. For a relaxed visit, focus on the monastery, the viewpoints and shorter walks. For longer hikes, start as early as you can.
Autumn: Probably the Best Overall Balance
Autumn is another excellent time to visit Montserrat. September and October offer a very good balance between pleasant temperatures and decent daylight. What they do not offer is fewer people: October is the busiest month of the year on the mountain. For hiking, photography and a more comfortable day trip from Barcelona, autumn is still one of the best seasons to choose — just not the quietest.
Winter: Quieter, Colder and More Atmospheric
Winter is the quiet season, and not by a small margin: there are fewer people on the mountain than at any other time of year. It is colder, the days are shorter and it is not the season for long hikes — but for the monastery, the Basilica and the viewpoints near the sanctuary it is one of the best. And What Is the Best Day to Visit Montserrat?
A weekday. Without a doubt.The official visitor statistics are monthly, not daily, so anyone who gives you a percentage for Saturdays is making it up. What I can tell you is that I see it every time I go: Montserrat is very crowded most days of the year, and on weekends it’s even more so.
Besides, there’s something interesting about Saturdays in particular. The Escolania, the Montserrat boys choir that’s one of the main reasons people come here, doesn’t sing on Saturdays. So Saturday is the busiest day of the week, and at the same time, it robs you of one of the best parts of the visit. If you can choose the day, come Monday through Friday.

The best time of day to visit Montserrat is usually early in the morning.
Arriving early has several advantages:

- temperatures are usually more comfortable
- you have more time to explore
- you avoid the hottest hours in summer
- you reduce the risk of feeling rushed
- you can enjoy the views before the busiest part of the day
If you are coming from Barcelona, try to start early. Montserrat is not a place where I would recommend arriving very late, especially if you want to do more than just visit the monastery. Early morning is especially important in summer, when the middle of the day can feel hot and tiring.

Best Time to Visit Montserrat for Hiking
If you are looking for one of the best times for hiking near Barcelona, Montserrat is usually most enjoyable in spring and autumn. These periods are usually much more comfortable than summer, especially on exposed trails. The mountain has many routes where shade is limited, so heat can make the experience harder than expected.
Summer hiking is possible, but you should be careful. Start early, bring enough water, protect yourself from the sun and avoid the hottest hours of the day. Winter hiking can also be possible, but conditions are more variable. Shorter days, cold wind and changing weather should be taken seriously. For most visitors, the best hiking conditions in Montserrat are found outside the hottest and coldest parts of the year.
Montserrat in Winter: Is It Worth Going?
Yes, and for two reasons that have nothing to do with the weather. It is by far the quietest time of year. January and February run at roughly half of October’s daily figure — look at the chart above and the gap is obvious. You get the same mountain with half as many people on it.
It’s also drier than people expect. In January, it rains an average of 2.8 days a month—less than in any other month of the year except July. The cold is real, not the rain: expect around 9 °C at midday and single-digit temperatures in the morning, in the shade, and when the wind is blowing. And the choir is there. The Escolania is away for most of July and August, so a weekday in winter is one of the best opportunities of the year to hear them—contrary to what most people assume.
The real limitations are the few hours of daylight and the cable car, which closes for maintenance for most of January, while the rack railway continues to operate. Winter is the coldest time to visit Sant Jeroni. It’s an excellent season to visit the monastery, the basilica, the Black Madonna, and the viewpoints near the sanctuary… as long as you bring a coat.
Final Recommendation
Put it together: a weekday morning, ideally in June. A month with good weather and fewer people than May or October, a day without the weekend crowds, and the hours before the mountain fills up. If June does not fit your dates, late September is the closest match. And if the only day you have is a Saturday, come as early as you can.
